SO CAL Photo Ops March 2013


Through April 21 Santa Anita Race Track - Arcadia
Early mornings before the races, go to Clockers Corner where you can see all the horses going to the track for practice. Get great close up shots and images of the horses running the track. Also on weekends FREE tram tour, Board the Seabiscuit Tram at Clockers Corner and take a tour of the stable area, receiving barn and Paddock Gardens. See Seabiscuit's original stall and barn, areas used during the filming of the movie Seabiscuit, the jockeys room, silks room, saddling paddock and walking ring with its topiary and statuary. Meet the equine star of Seabiscuit, Fighting Furrari, who played the primary role in the film. See the carriage horses in their home under the grandstand. Truly a unique experience you will not soon forget. Tours depart at 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday during the Santa Anita season, excluding Derby Day. Season ends April 21st.

March 1-May 2 - Flower Fields - Carlsbad
Check ahead on condition of flowers. Early in the season the showing can be poor, check ahead.
For many years the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch have been a favorite location to photograph the ranunculuses each spring. The ranch offers tours as well as special events such as Kid's Day and an Arts & Craft fair. The hillside looks like a carpet of color with 50 acres of extraordinary color in bloom on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with a special nursery, garden, and gift shop. Address is 5704 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92008 off Hwy. From Los Angeles and Orange County:
Head south on Interstate 5 to Palomar Airport Road exit. Head east (left turn) on Palomar Airport Road to Paseo Del Norte and turn left. Make an immediate right into the parking lot. Visit  for more information. Hours 9-6.

March 2 People's Day at La Purisma Mission - Lompoc
It's 1822 at the mission as costumed docents and staff portray life of the mission during that era. Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Location: Highway 246 near Lompoc.

March 2-3  and March 9-10  -   Festival of Whales  -  Dana Point Harbor     
The annual Dana Point Festival of Whales celebrates the return of the once-endangered California Gray Whale with a leviathan-size event. In addition to whale watching at the height of whale watching season, festival includes a kick-off parade, Sand Sculpting, Ocean Awareness Day, musical entertainment, on-the-water Concert, Whale of a Block Party, Art Shows, Pancake Breakfast, BBQs, Kids Interpretive Crafts, Classic Car Exhibits, Lectures/Seminars at multiple venues including the Ocean Institute, Historic Walking Tours, Paddling Events, Sailing/Rowing/Kayak/SUP Demos, plus much more!  See Schedule on web site.

March 9-10 - Vista Civil War Reanactment - Vista
Location: Antique Gas and Steam Museum, 2040 N Santa Fe Ave. Time: 10AM-5PM each day. Visitors can expect to see real live cannon fire, period costumes, historical figures, authentic battles, meet with the soldiers in their camps, attend demonstrations and more during the two-day festival. Battles will be held twice daily at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. both days. Civil War living history tours will be held throughout the weekend and include demonstrations as well as displays. The museum will also have walking tours of their collections of antique equipment and offer visitors a selection of food and refreshment.

March 9-10 Annual CSU Long Beach Pow Wow - Long beach
Admission is Free, Parking $4.00, event in the central quad.

March 16 El Centro Air Show - El Centro Navel Air Facility
Many photography hobbyist and several professional photographers take advantage of the Naval Air Facility El Centro Air Show to get some spectacular photographs. Visitors to the Air Show are welcome and encouraged to take photographs of the event. Air Show features the Blue Angel Navy Flight Demonstration Squadrons's first appearance of the season. March 16 Mission Life Day at La Purisma Mission - Lompoc
Join the costumed docents and staff for an opportunity to observe and participate in the craft activities that supplied the needs of the mission residents. Demonstrated crafts may include: tortilla making, candle making, soap making, spinning and weaving, carpentry, pottery, and blacksmithing. Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Location: Highway 246 near Lompoc.

March 16 - Saint Patricks Day Parade and Festival - San Diego
Bagpippers, bands, equestrians, floats and drill teams parade up Fifth Ave. and down Sixth Street. Parade with 120 entries starts at Sixth and Juniper at 10:30 AM Festival at Balboa Park starts at 10:00 AM

March 16-17  -  Vallecito Days  - Vallecito Valley, San Diego County
Join us for the Sixth Annual Vallecito days, celebrating life on the 1860s frontier and the role of the Southern Overland trail during the Civil war.  Visit with a Civil War infantry squad as they re-enact the California Column’s 1862 march from California to Texas and camp at the Vallecito Stage Station County Park throughout the weekend.  Tour the Vallecito Stage Station.  Visit the Mountain Man camp for hands-on demonstrations.  Vallecito Regional Park,  37349 County Route S2 between mile markers 34 and 35.

March 16-April 7  -  Butterfly Jungle - Wild Animal Park -- Escondido
Butterfly Jungle at the Wild Animal Park in Escondido opens on March 16th.  It's a small exhibit so it's best to get there early before the lines form.  When it gets busy they only allow so many in at a time.  Opens 9 AM to 7 PM,  Usually many varieties of butterflies makes it easy for images.

 March 16-17 Civil War Reenactment - Anaheim.
This event is held at St. Catherin's Military School, 215 N. Harbor Blvd. It's not as big as some but a lot of the students in military uniforms can make for great pictures. You are allowed to go in the camps between battles. Watch out for some of the buildings outside the campus that might get in your image. Parking is on the streets.

March 23 - Swallows Day Parade - San Juan Capistrano
Annual Parade and street fair and marketplace to celebrate the return of the swallows to San Juan Capistrano Mission on St. Joseph Day  Parade begins at 11AM followed by a Street Fair. Historic Town Center Park.

March 23-24 Mountain Men Days - La Purisma Mission - Lompoc
Buckskin clad members of the American Mountain Men share mountain men history and skills. Cooking, hide preparation and tanning, leather working, rope making, and blacksmithing are among the skills that visitors may experience. Equipment will be on display and tall tales will surround the campfire.  10AM-3:30PM.  Hwy 246 near Lompoc.

March 23-24 - Spring Busker Festival - San Diego
Dozens of urban artists gather in San Diego to perform their family-friendly acts for the crowds.Noon-5PM Seaport Village, Harbor Drive and Pacific Hwy.

March 23-24  -  Daffodil Show  -  Julian
More than a thousand Daffodils will be on display.  Julian Town Hall  2129 Main,

March 30 - Blessing of the Animals  -  Los Angeles
Traditional blessing of the animals for the benefits they provide mankind.  Colorful procession, music and cultural entertainment.  El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, Olvera Street. Blessing from 9-6, parade at 2 pm.

APRIL 2013

April 4-7  -  Redlands Classic Bicycle Race  -  Redlands
Looks like an interesting race from images on the website but few details.  Start line is on Citrus Ave. between 5th and 6th in Downtown Redlands.  Top rated riders will be in the race, many events every day including events for men, women and handicap events.

April 6 - Riverside Airport Air Show - Riverside
9AM-4PM at the Riverside Airport, 6951 Flight Road. Now in its 18th year, the Riverside Airshow continues to be one of Riverside’s two largest family entertainment events. Free Admission. This one-day show attracts 90,000 spectators from Riverside and the Inland Empire to see the most exciting aerial performers in the airshow business today. With more than 200 acres of aircraft displays, fun for the kids, food and refreshments, helicopter displays and community group exhibits your family will be thrilled to be part of this very unique entertainment opportunity.

April 5 - La Jolla Concours d'Elegance - La Jolla
More than 150 classic vehicles including horseless carriages, woodies, vintage motorcycles and British, Italian and German marques. Ellen Browning Scripps Park, 1180 Coast Boulevard.

April 6-7  -  Prado Civil War Re-Enactment  -  Chino
This large re-enactment covers a large part of the Prado Regional Park,  Battles are at 1PM and 5 PM on Sat.; 11AM and 3 PM Sunday.  Battles are on rolling hills that make for a realistic background and helps block distractions in the background.  You can visit the camps and lots of food for sale.  The park charges $10.00 to park and the event is $10.00.

April 6-May 19 - Renaissance Pleasure Faire - Irwindale
One of the largest Renaissance Fairs in the area for seven weekends on 20 acres. Many performances each weekend on 14 stages. Great place to spend the day photographing the many fair goers and artisans in period dress. Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area,15501 Arrow Hwy - Irwindale.

April 13 - Doheny Wood (car show) - Dana Point
Great chance to take pictures of classic Woodies. The 2012 show is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2011. The meet will be held at Doheny State Beach beginning at 8 AM and concluding at 5 PM. Doheny State Beach is located in Dana Point Harbor area at 25300 Dana Point Harbor Drive, Dana Point, CA 92629. The woodie meet will be held at the south end of the park. $15.00 park entry fee, no charge for the show.

Apr 21 – Orange Plaza Car Show - Orange
19th Annual Car Show in downtown Orange surrounds the circle with beautiful classic cars, More than 425 pre-1975 custom, classic, hot rod and street rods will be on display. There is no admission fee for spectators. Time: 8 am to 3 pm. Location: Chapman and N. Glassell. 425 pre-1975 Street Rods, Custom and Classic vehicles will be on display. The show is estimated to bring out 15,000+ spectators to the beautiful Plaza area in the City of Orange. It is a wonderful event for the entire family to enjoy. Local restaurants and shops will welcome all in attendance. There is no admission fee for spectators.

April 20-21 - Scandinavian Festival - Thousand Oaks
Folk dancing, music, dames, kids activities, food vendors and a Viking Encampment and Sami village. 10AM-5PM California Lutheran University, 60 West Olsen Rd.

April 18-21 - Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival - Santa Clarita
Real Cowboys show off their poetry, storytelling, music, food and trick roping. Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio, 24715 Oak Creek, Newhall.

April 19-21 Lakeside Rodeo and Parade - Lakeside (San Diego County)

Live entertainment, exhibits, arts and crafts, food and kids activities. Lancaster City Park.

April 27  -  Doo Dah Parade  -  Pasadena
Daring to go where no parade has gone before, this year’s Pasadena Doo Dah Parade will again bring its own brand of raucous eccentricity East. The 2013 Parade takes place on Saturday, April 27th, stepping off at 11am in East Pasadena along Colorado Boulevard

April 27-28 - San Bernardino Railroad Days - San Bernardino
Amtrack and BNSF trains, a steam engine, railroad artifacts, reenactors, food, music and vendors.
On April 27th and 28th, 2013, a steam powered excursion train will be operated to San Bernardino Railroad Days, sponsored by the San Bernardino History & Railroad Museum.
Saturday, April 27th: The steam special will be operated from Los Angeles to San Bernardino, departing at 10:00 am, over the Metrolink San Gabriel Subdivision.
Sunday, April 28th: The train will return to Los Angeles, departing San Bernardino at 3:00 pm. San Bernardino Depot, 1170 W Third St.

April 22-26 - National Park Week - USA
If you are traveling this week, entrance fees into the National Parks will be free for all 392 National Parks. In addition, many national park concessions are offering special promotions that are certain to add to your fun.

May 4-5 - Planes of Fame Air Show - Chino
7000 Merrill at the Chino Airport. Gates open 8AM-5PM, Show 11AM to 4PM.

So Cal Photo Opps February 2013

Salton Sea can be great for birds as they migrate to warmer locations. Both Brown and White Pelicans come here. Check out the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge for large flocks for birds in their ponds. Best time is now through January. The refuge winters up to 30,000 snow, Ross's, and Canada geese, and 60,000 ducks from November through February. Marsh birds and shorebirds account for more than 6,000,000 use-days each year. Endangered species observed on the refuge include the southern bald eagle, peregrine falcon, California brown pelican, Yuma clapper rail, and desert pupfish.

Experience the day to day life on a mid 1860’s California U. S. Army post. Both military and civilian impressions welcomed. Period correct attire only. Saturday and Sunday will provide period activities that will allow military participants to experience barracks life and training of the typical soldier. Enlisted military personnel will sleep in Fort Tejon’s original barracks, Friday and Saturday nights, officers and female civilians will be housed in the officers quarters.

Relive the battle between North and South in this authentic Civil War Re-enactment. The weekend includes drills, music, living history displays, and much more! 9AM-5PM.
Reenacters take over the the old Ghost town with several battles during the day and you can visit the encampments between the action. Because Calico is in the hills, you get a whole different type of background for the battles than others in the area.
