November 2011


Not much going on in November and December except for the usual Holiday activities.  If you know of some photogenic event that fellow photographers may like to attend and photograph, e-mail the information to Larrysphoto@att.net

Through - Nov 4 - Horse Racing - Santa Anita

Horse raceing fall season at Santa Anita, Closing Day Nov. 4th. Great place to spend a morning photographing. Get there early at Clockers Corner to see all the horses going out to the track to warm up. You can get some really close images. They generally have tours of the barns and other areas of the race track which is free. First race is 1:00 PM.

Nov 10 - Veterans Day Celebration - Riverside
Parade, bands concerts, war birds and military vechicles, airplane rides, vintage cars and hot rods. Flabob Airport 4130 Mennes Ave., Riverside.  www.flabob.org

Nov 10-11  The Blue and Gray - Civil War - Moorpark
More than 800 reenactors participate in the battle of Antietam 1862.  You can watch the battle unfold, visit the encampments and visit the period craft displays.  Tierra Rejada Ranch, 3370 Sunset Valley Rd., Moorpark, CA  www.moorparkrotary.com
Nov 14-Jan 1  - Downtown on Ice - Los Angeles
Outdoor skating rink among LA's skyscrapers. Free events include concerts, Holiday Festival, skating exhibitions. Pershing Square.

Nov 24-Jan 1 - Holiday of Lights - Del Mar
You can drive through a 1.5 mile route around Del Mar racetrack to see more than 400 lighted and animated holiday scenes. Del Mar fairgraounds. www.holidayoflights.com

Nov 23-Jan 8 - Festival of Lights - Riverside
Millions of lights and animated characters on display. Ice Skating rink and vendors. Mission Inn, 3649 Mission Inn Ave Riverside, California 92501 (951) 784-0300

Nov 24-Dec 23 - Christmas Tree Holiday Train - Fillmore
Families can ride with Santa to a Christmas aTree farm to select and cut their tree. Weekends only. Fillmore & Western Railway.

December 2012

Salton Sea can be great for birds as they migrate to warmer locations. Both Brown and White Pelicans come here. Check out the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge for large flocks for birds in their ponds. Best time is now through January. The refuge winters up to 30,000 snow, Ross's, and Canada geese, and 60,000 ducks from November through February. Marsh birds and shorebirds account for more than 6,000,000 use-days each year. Endangered species observed on the refuge include the southern bald eagle, peregrine falcon, California brown pelican, Yuma clapper rail, and desert pupfish. http://www.fws.gov/refuges/profiles/index.cfm?id=81631

Dec 14-15 - Christmas in the Village - La Mesa
The village is transformed into a Victorian wonderland with strolling minstrels, parade, carolers and street performers.  Horse drawn carrages, bonfires and carnaval rides and Santa!  La Mesa Village, 7830 La Mesa Blvd.  www.lmvma.com

Dec 15 - Naples Islands Holiday Boat Parade - Long Beach
Gondolas and festively decorated small and lare boats cruise the canals of Napels Island and Alamitos Bay.

Dec 27 - Port of San Diego Balloon Parade - San Diego
Americas largest Balloon Parade includes giant charactor balloons, marching bands, drill teams and floats.  Wiener National Finals (dog races) and a 5k run/walk.  Downtown SD, www.holidaybowl.com
