July 9-10 - Lotus Festival - Los Angeles
Location: Echo Park. The mission of the Lotus Festival is to develop, promote and create an atmosphere of understanding in which Asian and Pacific Islander communities in Southern California are brought together for two (2) days of cultural sharing. Opening Ceremonies on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 12:00 p.m., to earmark the celebration of the 33rd Lotus Festival, which includes live music, dance and entertainment from a variety of performers representing many of the diverse countries of Asia and the Pacific Islands. This year, the Festival will highlight the people and cultures of Thailand with the support of the Royal Thai Consulate General Los Angeles. Echo Park Lake in Los Angeles, California, is located on Park Avenue between Glendale Avenue and Echo Park Boulevard, just north of the Hollywood (101) and Pasadena (110) freeway junction, near Dodger Stadium. Dragon Boat races are one of the major events for photographers.

Aug 6 - Dragoon Era - Ft Tejon
Come and take a step back in time and see California as it was in 1856. At Fort Tejon State Historical Park vistors can witness life at this U.S. Army post of the far west. Fort Tejon was a crossroads for many converging and competing cultures of the 1850s. Vistors are invited to view the living history demonstrations of everyday life of the common soldier and civilian men, women and children at this mountain outpost. 10AM-3PM

Aug 21 - Mission Life Day at La Purisma Mission - Lompoc
It's 1822 at the mission as costumed docents and staff portray life of the mission during that era. Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Location: Highway 246 near Lompoc.

Aug 20-21 - Wings Over Camarillo - Camarillo
A great airshow with many events and static displays. The morning of the event gives attendees the chance to see a variety of experimental aircraft in flight. Starting at 9:00 AM both Saturday and Sunday, you will enjoy a range of ultralight and homebuilt aircraft. An announcer will provide you details and exciting commentary on each aircraft. The Goodyear Blimp will fly over the area both mornings. This year we have more aircraft than ever taking to the skies during the air portions of the event, both Saturday and Sunday. Many of these planes are privately owned and maintained. Many are flown by the owner pilot. This is a rare chance to see these beautifully maintained aircraft flying. Aug 20 - Uptown Whittier Car Show - Whittier
The Whittier Uptown Association will present a Car Show Extravaganza. More Cars, More Vendors and More Fun! The 11th Annual Uptown Whittier Car Show will exhibit over 600 cars from muscle cars, hot rods, customs, antiques, and restored classics. Trophies will be awarded to each 1st place category. The Car Show will be held Saturday, August 20th, 2010, in Historic Uptown Whittier, along Greenleaf Ave. and Philadelphia St., beginning from 9:00am to 7:00pm. Bring the whole family for a full day of fun in the picturesque Uptown Whittier.

Aug 20-21 - Pt. Magu Surfing Contest at Pelican Point - Pt. Magu
NBVC will host the 2010 NBVC Point Mugu Surf Contest Presented by Quiksilver. This is an exciting opportunity for the surfing community to access one of the best waves Southern California has to offer, and for NBVC to showcase our award winning stewardship of the environmentally sensitive beach and wetlands area inside our gates. This is a community engagement event for NBVC. Proceeds from this event will benefit the MWR Single Sailor/Liberty program. They will have a photo contest.

Aug 20-21 - Fort Tejon Civil War Invitational - Lebec
Reeanactment battles, Union and Confederate Camps, tours of the fort's old barracks and officers house. Bring Lunch. They usually have two battles for day and you can go into the camps between battles.

Aug 28-29 Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo - San Juan Capistrano
The rodeo will take place at the Oaks Blenheim Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, located at the intersection of Ortega Highway and Antonio Parkway/La Pata on the western border of the Rancho Mission Viejo in South Orange County.
The Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo is good old entertainment for the entire family, not to mention the richest 2-day rodeo in the nation with a purse totaling over $200,000. The top 30 rodeo contestants in saddle bronc and bareback riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, bull riding and team roping will come to San Juan Capistrano for this chance of a lifetime. Gates open at 2PM Sat, rodeo starts at 4PM and gates open at 11:30 AM on Sunday, rodeo starts at 1:30 PM. While I have not photographed at this rodeo, I have heard it is a good one.

Aug 27 and Sept 24 Cruise Aboard the Lane Victory, WWII Ship - San Pedro
The Lane Victory is a WWII Merchant Marine Ship built in 1945 and docked at San Pedro. Normally a museum, it sails out to Catalina Island and back several times a year. I did this cruise 2 years and had a blast. Lunch is served along with drinks. WWII entertainment and reeanactors on board, German spy is captured and the ship will be attacked by WWII German aircraft on the way back and saved by the US planes. Lots to photograph and a fun day. Located at Pier 94 in San Pedro. LA Fire Boats greet the ship on the way into port--blowing water.
